Testaverde signed, may start Sunday

The Panthers hope Testaverde will be ready after a five-day crash course. With Jake Delhomme set to undergo season-ending elbow surgery and David Carr missing practice and walking gingerly Wednesday with a back injury, Testaverde could be Carolina's best option.

"He's a guy we were fortunate enough to find at this point in the season," coach John Fox said.

Joining his sixth franchise, Testaverde has played in 226 games with 208 starts. The No. 1 overall pick in the 1987 draft was cut by New England before the start of the season.

"He brings experience," general manager Marty Hurney said. "He throws the ball extremely well. He's a fierce competitor."

Delhomme gone for remainder of 2007

It's a good thing David Carr had a pretty good game Sunday, because now he's our #1 QB... for the rest of the season!

Jake will be having Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament. While in surgery, doctors will address another partially torn tendon in the same elbow that has bothered Jake for a few years now.

Can't get the Panthers on your TV??

There seems to be a way to watch NFL games on your computer, for free. I'm not sure if it is legal, but, without saying I have done it, I can tell you it works.

Go here: http://streamednfl.blogspot.com/

And you will have to download either SOPcast Download or TVants Download on that page. Links for both are on the right side menu.

Do at your own risk, I would imagine the NFL wouldn't like people watching games for free, but it seems that a lot of folks are doing it without any problems.

Panthers vs Texans pre-game notes

Safety Deke Cooper and Defensive End Mike Rucker are on this week's Injured List as of Sunday morning. Deke is officially "questionable". Rucker is listed as "probable".

What kind of intel does David Carr bring to the table. The former number 1 overall pick of the Texans started at QB for 5 seasons there. If anyone should know their offense it's him.

It'll be a homecoming of sorts for Mario Williams. Williams played for my beloved NC State Wolfpack, and hails from Richlands, NC. I go through Richlands every time I make the trek from Raleigh to Emerald Isle in the summer.

Keys to the Game:
1) Will the Texans DL be able to put pressure on Jake?
2) Will the Panthers shut down the Houston running game as they did to STL last week?
3) Will Foster break 100 yards rushing?

Carolina Panthers fortify practice facility to keep out spies

When a four-story condominium building across the street from the Carolina Panthers' practice fields went up several years ago, the running joke had the team's divisional opponents pooling their money to buy a unit on the top floor.

When the building caught fire a few years later, the joke was the Panthers had something to do with it.

Today, the condos are still there, but the view has changed. Strategically planted trees and a tarp over the black iron fence surrounding the fields make it difficult to see anything from a condo balcony.

Welcome to the paranoid world of the NFL - brought to light this week by the New England Patriots' spying scandal.

"I think there's an advantage if you know what's going to happen before it happens," Panthers coach John Fox said. "You always worry about that, whether it's the playbook or signals. It's just like in baseball, they try to protect their signals. But sometimes people get them."

For some time, Fox has talked about building a bubble over the practice fields - not for the few rainy days, but to keep people from peering in. The Panthers already employ a security team that watches practice and chases away anyone who stops along the fence and might stumble upon inside information.

Last year, the Panthers worked on direct snaps to running back DeAngelo Williams during a practice before surprising the Atlanta Falcons with it. Before the ill-fated Chris Gamble lateral turned into a costly turnover in Week 2 against Minnesota last year, the Panthers worked on the trick play in practice.

Safety Deke Cooper said Thursday that in training camp - when practices are open to the public - the team worked on defences they'll never use in regular-season games to try to throw off other teams. Before last week's season opener against St. Louis, they installed several different schemes they never worked on in camp.

Still, Cooper thinks the Rams' unusual call that resulted in Torry Holt's three-yard touchdown catch Sunday was a result of former Panther Chris Draft - now a member of the Rams - passing on a secret about his former team.

"You don't see that route run in the red zone very often," Cooper said. "But with how we play our red zone defence, it was definitely a good call."

Fox said they have three ways of relaying defensive signals from the sidelines. Some are hand signals, but Cooper said blitzes are called from the huddle.

Still, every little piece of information helps, and the Panthers have been challenged to keep their practice facility fortified as downtown Charlotte explodes with growth.

Last year, a skydiving simulator was set up in the parking lot of Johnson & Wales University, located across the street from the practice fields. While the Panthers worked on their game plan, people in full skydiving gear hovered in the air nearby.

While reporters joked about it at the end of practice, Fox didn't laugh. In the NFL, it's never funny if somebody sees what you're doing - even a wannabe skydiver.

"It just goes to show you in this game the difference between teams is very small," Rucker said. "People are wanting to get an edge."

Panthers add TE Christian Fauria

The Panthers signed former Redskins TE Christian Fauria on Tuesday. This gives Carolina experience at tight end with the release of Michael Gaines earlier this year. Current starting TE, Jeff King, is only in his second season, while even his backups are both rookies. Fauria has 13 seasons of NFL play under his belt.

9.10.2007

Panthers strong in week 1

Steve Smith had a 68-yard touchdown catch and Drew Carter added a pair of receiving scores as the Carolina Panthers defeated the St Louis Rams 27-13 on Sunday. Jake looked solid, and the defense played very well. An encouraging start to a unknown season.

Colbert #2 WR

This offseason, Kerry Colbert was trying to stay on the team.
Now he's the #2 WR, opposite Steve Smith.

"I really just kept faith in myself and didn't believe what other people were saying or what I heard," Colbert said Wednesday. "That's kind of how I dealt with it."

Depth for the D; Wesley comes home

It's official, the Panthers inked deals with S Marquand Manuel and CB Dante Wesley on Monday.

Marquand is a 6th year player out of U of Florida. Last year for the Packers he tallied a career high of 81 tackles (62 solo) and ran an INT back for a TD. In 2002 he was the 6th rd pick of the Bengals.

Dante Wesley comes home to Carolina, where he played 4 seasons before defecting to the Bears last season. Dante was the 4th rd pick of the Panthers in 2002.

9.03.2007

Donald Bowens, my favorite player

One good feeling I have coming away from watching State lose to lowly UCF this past weekend was the performance of Sophomore WR Donald Bowens. He will be another in the long line of State WRs playing on Sundays. Let's hope Beck can get him the ball successfully the rest of the season. Bowens might lead the league in yards after catch if he gets an adequate number of receptions.

Panthers making moves, adding players

The Carolina Panthers made four roster moves Sunday, agreeing to terms with free agent cornerback Dante Wesley and claiming three players off waivers - quarterback Matt Moore from Dallas, tight end Marcus Freeman from Baltimore and tackle Frank Omiyale from Atlanta.

To make room on the roster, the Panthers waived offensive tackle Rashad Butler, a former third-round draft pick, and center Will Montgomery. They placed tight end Michael Gaines on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

The Panthers were also courting free agent safety Marquand Manuel, who was cut by the Green Bay Packers on Saturday.

D-II star Bell moves up to #3 QB for Panthers

Dalton Bell threw for almost 8,000 yards and 62 TDs at Division II West Texas A&M. With a season-ending wrist injury to reserve quarterback Brett Basanez, the undrafted rookie quarterback has a chance to make the regular season roster. Yesterday, Bell took some snaps with the first string.

8.20.2007

Dan Morgan to play Friday

Panthers linebacker Dan Morgan will see his first game action in about a year Friday. Dan hasn't played since last year's season opener when he suffered a concussion. What a difference I hope he makes this season! Above all though, I hope my man stays healthy, in the head.

Panthers get help in Secondary

Needing another experienced safety, the Panthers acquired two-year veteran Chris Harris yesterday from the Chicago Bears for a fifth-round choice in the 2008 draft.

"According to our scouts and coaches he's an instinctive player, and we feel he can come in here and compete," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said.

"I think we're fortunate the Bears have a real surplus at that position," Hurney said. "Chris is a guy that we feel can come in here, compete and help us."

A former Louisiana-Monroe standout, Harris is solidly built (6 feet tall, 205 pounds), and a good hitter. He was fined $7,500 last December for what the league viewed as over aggressiveness in a game against Minnesota.

In 25 games, including 20 starts, Harris has 112 tackles, five interceptions, eight passes defensed, one sack and one fumble recovery.

8.01.2007

Panthère de Caroline?

Trying out for our Panthers 53-man roster is 28 year old linebacker Philippe Gardent (6'1" 240 lbs). This member of France's national bobsled team passed up the Olympics to pursue his dream of playing in the NFL some day.

Is he good? He was the first European-born player to claim NFL Europa MVP. Last year he led the league with 70 tackles and was co-Defensive POTY. This year he had 77 tackles and made the All-NFL Europa defensive team.

He's hoping he can do for the NFL in France what Tony Parker did for the NBA.

Bon chance!

Get tipsy a lil early in Charlotte

A provision expected in the final state budget would allow fans at Carolina Panthers games to buy alcohol one hour earlier than the law now allows on Sundays. North Carolina alcoholic beverage control laws prohibit Sunday sales before noon. But lawmakers wrapping up their negotiations agreed to allow beer to be sold starting at 11 a.m. The change appears to apply only to sales in the stands of Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, where the Panthers play.

Sad news on Tobacco Road today

Wake Forest basketball coach Skip Prosser died on Thursday morning of an apparent heart attack shortly after jogging. Prosser was rushed to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Prosser, 56, was one of the most well-liked coaches in the industry and known for his witty and sarcastic sense of humor.

He grew up in Pittsburgh and went to high school at Carnegie before attending the United States Merchant Marine Academy.

Prosser has spent the past seven seasons at Wake Forest after spending one year at Loyola (Md.) and seven at Xavier. He has a career record of 291-146.

Prosser led Wake Forest to the NCAA Tournament in each of his first four seasons and the Demon Deacons won the ACC regular-season in 2003. The Demon Deacons have struggled recently — missing the tournament in each of the past two years.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Coach Prosser's family and Wake Forest University. I have gained a lot of respect for Coach Prosser both as a person and as a coach. It is a tremendous loss for our conference and for college basketball." -- N.C. State coach Sidney Lowe.

ESPN: NC State #40 over past decade

ESPN is ranking all 119 D-1 football teams from the '97-'06 span. Just a few minutes ago numbers 26-50 was published. NC State comes in at a respectable #40 given last years horrid season. State ranks ahead of ACC counterparts: Duke, WF, UNC, and Virginia.

Says ESPN's Mark Schlabach:
The Wolfpack had nearly two dozen NFL draft picks during former coach Chuck Amato's tenure, but won only 23 games in his last four seasons combined. After losing quarterback Phillip Rivers to the NFL draft, the Wolfpack endured losing seasons in two of Amato's last three seasons. Former Boston College coach Tom O'Brien was hired to bring stability and discipline to the program.

Panthers Pre-Camp Post

The Carolina Panthers start camp tomorrow. Here are some things to keep in mind going into the pre-season scramble:

- How will our secondary look? Other than Mike Minter, there's little experience or stability. We need someone to step up and claim a position.
- Who will step up and compliment Steve Smith? The Panthers have a stable of young talented receivers, but talent alone doesn't make a team successful. Who will show what it takes to make the big catch, or more importantly, make the easy catch! I'm looking for Dwayne Jarrett to impress.
- RUN THE BALL! DeAngelo and DeShaun need to be utilized this season. We only had 7 rushing TDs last season. Pathetic.
- Conditioning: The Panthers were pummeled by injuries last season. Kris Jenkins and Mike Rucker are the keys to the defense. Let's pray that they are fully recovered and in the best shapes of their careers.

Panthers Pre-season Schedule and Notes

PRESEASON SCHEDULE:
8/11 at NY Giants
8/17 at Philadelphia
8/24 vs. New England
8/30 vs. Pittsburgh

*Players report for camp on July 27th

Take note: Dan Henning is out, Jeff Davidson is in. Davidson was Offensive Coordinator for the Browns. the main change will be a zone-blocking philosophy. And watch to see who takes the #2 WR spot with Meshawn gone.

Niners Nation on Panthers Offseason Adds

While David Carr will not be a starter (at least in the near future), he was definitely a high profile free agent pickup. Carr has spent most of his NFL career flat on his ass in Houston. If Delhomme were to get hurt or prove ineffective, Carr could very well get a legit shot to run with things. While it might be easy to declare Carr a bust and be done with it, you could just as easily argue for extenuating circumstances in Houston. While I like Jake Delhomme and hope he does not get hurt, I can't help but be mighty curious to see how Carr would look at the helm of the Panthers offense.

While the Panthers did not make a huge impact in free agency, I think they did a very solid job in the draft. I was one of those here on the Dwayne Jarrett bandwagon and think that he could make an impact in year 1, especially without the pressure of being a starter right off the bat. Jon Beason is going to get a chance to start at OLB right away, while Ryan Kalil looks to be groomed as the center of the future. While I'm clearly a big fan of the 49ers draft, I am impressed with Carolina's haul.

SMQ's outlook on ACC football '07

NC State
- - -
We Know: The Wolfpack have two big, positively hunky juniors, Toney Baker (6-0, 232) and Andre Brown (5-10, 225) who were top ten running back recruits and have methodically slogged their way to 2,500 yards in two years.

We Think: New coordinator Dana Bible - late of the bran-infused B.C. attack - will fix whatever hitch in the playcalling mechanism led NC State to skew passward with ex-walk-on Daniel Evans and a group of receivers led by a tight end with one career touchdown catch. Evans threw nine interceptions to one touchdown in his last seven starts (all defeats) while heaving up, at various times, 37, 35, 53 and 41 passes in games eventually decided by one score. The Pack passed more often than it handed off six times last year, but it was never better off for it.

We Have No Clue: How Tom O'Brien's stoicism will mesh with players recruited by the fiery, raspy Amato, or, more importantly, whether Evans has enough physically for the new coach's lauded motivational/disciplinary side to matter.

Atsur will wear Benetton Colours

I was scouring rosters at www.eurobasket.com and found our boy Engin Atsur as a STARTER for BENETTON TREVISO.

Details: Benetton Treviso signed Atsur to a three-year contract. He played for Turkey last summer at the World Championships in Japan, where he posted 6.1 points and 1.2 assists per game in nearly 16 minutes during 9 appearances as his team placed sixth. Atsur is the second guard to join Benetton this week after Lionel Chalmers also signed.

Sidney Lowe - Watered Down

Two weeks after the start of Raleigh's lawn irrigation restrictions, inspectors are continuing to cite unexpectedly large numbers of residents, many of them in four large residential developments.

More people were caught Monday for breaking the alternate-day rules than on the first day of the water restrictions, July 2. On that first day, enforcement officers issued warning notices to 31 offenders. Monday, they cited 33.

Among those breaking the rules was Sidney Lowe, N.C. State University basketball coach. A citation was issued Saturday for improper watering at the 9,500-square-foot house he and his wife own on a half-acre lot in Brier Creek. A spokeswoman for the NCSU basketball team said Lowe would have no comment.

Former FB coach charged with Assault

Rutgers top assistant football coach Chris Demarest was charged with assault after an altercation in a bar at the New Jersey shore.

Demarest has been the defensive secondary coach at Rutgers for three years. In March, he was promoted to assistant head coach. Before coming to Rutgers, he was defensive backs coach at N.C. State from 2000-2003 and a graduate assistant at Florida State from 1998-99.

ECU gets all 12 games on TV

All 12 of ECU's football games this year will be on tv. Coupled with the five previously announced on-air listings by ESPN and CSTV, the Pirates' remaining seven games were picked up by the local NBC affiliate and regional sports network.

Yeah, I'm pissed off too!

TOB comments from DailyPress.com

Here are some highlites from an article TOB's first year here at State:
N.C. State boasts premium facilities and rabid fans, essential elements (TOB) hadn't previously inherited; the Wolfpack has a natural in-state recruiting base that he, a proven Division I-A head coach with regional ties and a veteran staff, can use to establish the consistency that was his hallmark at Boston College.

Offensive coordinator Dana Bible was a Wolfpack assistant during the 1980s; tight ends coach Jim Bridge worked at The Citadel; O'Brien and defensive coordinator Mike Archer were staff mates at

Virginia; offensive-line coach Don Horton was Norfolk Catholic's head coach during the late 1980s, and secondary coach Mike Reed has a stop at the University of Richmond on his rsum.

Can TOB take State to a bowl in his first year?

Maybe not this season but soon. O'Brien brings a new level of discipline to the program after Chuck Amato's departure. But is there enough talent to win six games?

First, the Wolfpack must find a quarterback. Daniel Evans threw six touchdowns and 11 interceptions last season. Nebraska transfer Harrison Beck will push him.

The defense will be stout under new coordinator Mike Archer, who has a star in end DeMario Pressley.

Class of '08 National Top 100 Released

It is mid-April and time for the first edition of the Scout.com National Top 100. Here are the NC State recruits on the list. All 3 are being recruited by Florida. Other notable schools like FSU, Clemson, Auburn, Alabama, Virginia, and UNC are in the mix too. It will be interesting to see if TOB can keep the NC recruits here, seeing as how CTC was criticized, albeit unfairly sometimes, for letting the top players in the state go to UNC or out of state schools.

#34 - Marcus Robinson, WLB, Florida
#57 - Terrell Manning, WLB, Scotland HS/Laurinburg, NC
#79 - Quinton Coples, DE, Kinston HS/Kinston, NC

TOB brings New Traditions

Bringing a tradition he observed while coaching with George Welsh at Virginia, new Wolfpack coach Tom O'Brien took in the fruits of several months of planning by the football administration Friday.
More than 300 former Wolfpack football players – from Woody Jones (Class of 1941) to Tank Tyler and A.J. Davis (Class of 2006) – accepted the new head coach’s invitation to gather at the Dail Practice facility adjacent to Carter-Finley Stadium, something O’Brien hopes will become an annual spring tradition. Most of them joined O’Brien and his staff at a reception afterwards in Vaughn Towers Friday evening.
